In the philosophy of language, the distinction between sense and reference was an innovation of the German philosopher and mathematician Gottlob Frege in 1892 (in his paper "On Sense and Reference"; German: "Über Sinn und Bedeutung"), reflecting the two ways he believed a singular term may have meaning.

At first, this task might seem not too pressing, since Frege explicitly discusses Kant's philosophy only once -- though famously -- in his 1884 Foundations of Arithmetic. There Frege argues, against Kant, that the truths of arithmetic are not based on intuition but are analytic a priori, and that logic can in fact extend our knowledge.

The first section below considers why a philosophical investigation of language mattered at all for Frege, the mathematician, and why it should have mattered to him. Widespread interest in Frege's general philosophical writings is, relatively speaking, a fairly recent phenomenon. But it is only very recently that his philosophy of mathematics has begun to attract the attention it now enjoys. Primarily a mathematician, Frege’s interest in language developed as a result of his attempt to devise a logical notation adequate for the formalization of mathematical reasoning. As a part of this effort, he invented not only modern mathematical logic but also a groundbreaking philosophical theory of meaning. Gottlob Frege is considered one of the founders of contemporary analytic philosophy. Revered by Russell and Wittgenstein, he laid substantial groundwork for predicate logic and the analysis of linguistic meaning.

Yet, unlike Russell and Wittgenstein, Frege's personality and private life was little publicized and is little known.
